PENTECOST SERVICE THIS EVENING
All are invited to celebrate Pentecost at the Woolwich Episcopal Area Service today at 6pm at All Saints Church in Peckham. There’ll be a chance for people from any church to share something about their experiences during the ‘Thy Kingdom Come’period of prayer that concludes today. There will also be an opportunity to be anointed with chrism oil during the service. All are welcome to stay for refreshments afterwards.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK
Thank you to everyone who contributed to Christian Aid Week. Through activities in church and a bucket collection at Eltham station, we raised the amazing amount of £1,137.35. Margaret Taylor also completed the Circle the City Walk and sent £100 to Christian Aid, of which £42 came from members of St John’s who sponsored her.
SUMMER CONCERT AT ST ALFEGE CHURCH, GREENWICH
The Thomas Tallis Society Choir will sing Bach’s Magnificat at a concert on Sunday 16th June. The event is being held to mark the forthcoming retirement of Revd Canon Chris Moody, vicar of St Alfege Church for 14 years and a member of the Thomas Tallis choir. PATRONAL FESTIVAL AND SUMMER FAIR
The church’s patronal festival will begin with a Eucharist on Thursday 20th June – Corpus Christi – and continue with a second Eucharist the following day. Thesummer fair follows on Saturday 22nd June from 10am-2pm, and the festival ends with a Parish Eucharist celebrating the Birth of John the Baptist on Sunday 23rd.
Contributions for the stalls at the fair, especially items for the children’s tombolasuch as small toys and treats, can be left in the parish office. If you’d like to help with the fair, it would be much appreciated! Please speak with Jene Kerr or Fr Jim.
Thank you to everyone who has brought in toys for the crèche. Storage is now full, so we cannot take any more, but we’re grateful to all those who’ve donated items!
GROWING IN FAITH AND LIFE
Applications are open for the Bishop’s Certificate in Discipleship 2019-2020, a 10-month course entitled ‘Growing in Faith and Life.’ The course, which runs from September to June, has six modules, including the history of the Anglican Church, what Christians believe, and ethics. Do pick up a leaflet at the back of church for further details. Please speak to Fr Jim if you have any questions.
WELCARE 125TH ANNIVERSARY SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING
Welcare, a charity long-supported by St John’s, will host a service of thanksgiving in Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 15th June at 11am. Its president, Bishop of Southwark the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, will officiate, while volunteers, staff and young people will also contribute to the service marking Welcare’s work over the past 125 years. On 14th July, the Rt Revd Dr Karowei Dorgu, Bishop of Woolwich, will come to St John’s for a Service of Confirmation. If you’re interested in confirmation, or if you’re not baptised but wish to make a commitment of faith, please speak with Fr Jim.
