Sunday 9th May 2021

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 2021: 9th May – 16th May

As Christian Aid Week cannot run as normal again this year, we will have an envelope collection today and next Sunday, and hopefully in June we’ll be able to organise our popular Super Soup Lunch or an afternoon tea, or both!

To mark Christian Aid Week, Margaret Taylor will be walking the boundary of our parish – about 5.5 miles – on 15th May. Margaret will start from Mottingham station just before 11am – if anyone would like to join her for all or part of the route, do find her after the service or phone 020 8850 9450. Margaret isn’t walking for sponsorship, but asks that everyone be generous in filling the Christian Aid envelopes.

There is also a Christian Aid Week prayer sheet on the noticeboard. If you would like a personal copy, please ask Robyn Price

Finally, thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christian Aid collection just before Christmas. We raised £110.

Next Sunday’s 10am Eucharist will be a family service. As such, there’ll be no crèche or Junior Church, to allow children to be part of the church family.

Since the foodbank in Eltham closed down, we have been sending our donations to a foodbank run by St Edward’s Church in Mottingham. We continue to encourage donations, which can be placed in the wicker basket at the back of church. A range of products are welcome, not just food – these are set out in a list in the basket.

We will hold our Annual Parochial Church Meeting immediately after the service on Sunday 30th May. This is an important meeting, which will not only review the past year at St John’s but also elect churchwardens for the coming year and try to fill any vacancies on the Parochial Church Council. The next PCC meeting will be on Tuesday 22nd June at 6pm in church, and will be Caroline Risdon’s first as the new vicar.

We pray for:

Our local churches: Saint Peter and St Paul, and St Barnabas, both in Mitcham; Holy Cross, Motspur Park; St Saviour, Raynes Park; The Ascension, Pollards Hill; All Saints, South Wimbledon; for the bishops, priests and people of all these places

Our mission: As Christian Aid Week begins, we pray for all those working to support sustainable development, eradicate poverty and provide disaster relief around the world, particularly in countries facing the effects of the mounting climate crisis

Ascension Day: As we approach Ascension Day on 13th May, we pray that, just as our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into the heavens, so may we also in heart and mind thither ascend, and with Him continually dwell

Those who are ill: Cindy Shipp, Revd Wheeler, Jean Harker

Those who recently died: Grace Williams, Iyatunde Thomas

Those whose year’s mind we keep: Rita Bryan, Douglas Warner, Martin Smith
