Sunday 24th December

CHRISTMAS CARDS

At the back of the church are alphabetical trays. Do take a look to see whether anyone has left cards for you. This is also your last chance to leave your own cards for members of the congregation! We’re sorry that we can’t forward or deliver any uncollected cards.

BIRTHDAY COFFEE

Would you like to commemorate a birthday or other special occasion? For a donation of £5, everyone can enjoy free tea or coffee on your chosen Sunday after the Parish Eucharist. A list of available dates is on the church noticeboard for you to sign up. For more information, please see Sheila Squire.

JESU, THOU ART ALL COMPASSION: A RETREAT AT ASCOT PRIORY

The ecumenical Spiritual Association of the Compassionate Hearts of Jesus & Mary (www.cchjm.org) will hold a weekend retreat on 15th-17th June 2018 at Ascot Priory in Berkshire. Set in the context of silence, the retreat invites you to enter into the compassionate heart of God through different perspectives – the Heart of the Father; the Heart in Silence; the Heart of Compassion, the Heart’s Gaze and the Heart’s Softener. Father Jim commends the retreat to all. The cost of the weekend is £160, and a booking form is available on request: please contact Fr John-Francis at cchjm@outlook.com, Parish Priest: Revd James Bryson – Tel. 020 8859 0802

CHRISTMAS SERVICES

This evening, there’ll be a Nativity service at 4pm, at which children can take part in the story of Christmas around the stable.

A Midnight Mass will be held at 11:30pm, and the Christmas Day Family Eucharist follows at 10am tomorrow. All are welcome!

DECORATING OUR CHURCH FOR CHRISTMAS

You’ll see there are two Christmas trees in church. One is decorated by the children of our church on the theme of the Jesse Tree, an Advent tree anticipating the coming of Christ. The other is decorated by the children of Eltham Church of England Primary School on the theme of Christmas carols.

Although we have trees, we have no flowers during Advent. The flowers and decorations that will adorn our church over Christmas were prepared on Friday and will be put on display after the 10am service today. Any help would be much appreciated!

CHURCH FLOWERS NEXT YEAR

Thank you to everyone who has helped to arrange the flowers in church this year. We’re now putting together next year’s rota. If you would like to join our small team, you’d be most welcome. No prior experience necessary, just speak to Fr Jim or Robyn Price.

CHRISTIAN AID: SOUTH SUDAN CRISIS APPEAL

Could you give a gift of £10 to provide food for a desperate family for one week? Famine has spread across parts of South Sudan this year – a country in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe, where 50 percent of people urgently need food. Envelopes are available in church for any donations to Christian Aid. These can be placed in the collection bags during the offertory or in the containers at the back of church. Thank you very much!

NO MORE GLITTER!

The leaders of our Junior Church have been discussing our use of glitter in the crafts enjoyed by the children. As reported in the news, the environmental impact of glitter has led some scientists to call for a ban. Most is made from plastic, and its small size makes it an ecological hazard, particularly in the oceans. Given the Church’s respect for the natural world and for all of Creation, we will stop using glitter at Junior Church from the new year.

AMY GOSLING

Amy Gosling, the oldest member of St John’s, died on Monday 4th December at the grand age of 103. We give thanks for her long life and keep her family in our prayers. Amy’s funeral will be held at 2pm on Wednesday 27th December at Eltham Crematorium.
