BISHOP OF WOOLWICH VISIT
The Bishop of Woolwich, the Rt Revd Dr Karowei Dorgu, will visit St John’s parish next month. Bishop Karowei is making his way around all the parishes in the Woolwich Episcopal Area, from Southwark to Plumstead. Please keep the bishop in your prayers.

ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL ADULT LEARNING PROGRAMME

The St Paul’s Cathedral Adult Learning Programme for the first half of 2018 is now available. It features speakers including Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury, who will discuss ‘Identity, Faith and Being Human,’ and writer Paula Gooder, who speaks on ‘The Cross in the Bible and Poetry.’ The programme also includes a reflective day about Bach’s St Matthew Passion with St Paul’s Director of Music Andrew Carwood. Do take a booklet from the back of church to see full details.

CHRISTIAN AID
Thanks to everyone who supported the Christian Aid appeal this Christmas. We raised almost £220. The launch of Christian Aid Week 2018 will be on Thursday 25th January in Lower Marsh behind Waterloo Station. If you’d like to come, please see Robyn Price.

BABY CLOTHES FOR SYRIA

We’ve received an appeal for baby clothes, in any size up to 18 months, for a hospital in Syria. Any outgrown or unwanted babywear would be most welcome, as well as any small hand-knitted garments. For more information, please see Joan Jeal.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY
Thursday 18th January marked the start of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This is an annual global ecumenical event where all churches of all denominations pray for unity as Christ calls us to come together as one church. The week ends with the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul on 25th January.

TRUTH TALKS
In February and March, the Westminster Abbey Institute will hold a series of talks on truth. With so much talk today of ‘alternative truth’ and ‘fake news,’ the abbey asks: Is truth now in shorter supply? How can it be recognised and where can it be found? Booking is free but essential. Please visit www.westminster-abbey.org/institute/truth

PARISH SUPPORT FUND
In 2016, Southwark Diocese introduced a new way of funding its parishes, inviting them to support the district’s shared responsibilities by making a financial pledge to the Parish Support Fund (PSF). Last year, St John’s contributed more than £36,000! The diocese now invites church members to come and hear about how the PSF is being used to support the ministry and mission of the church. Events will be held on:

  • Thursday 1st February at 10.30am at St Lawrence, Catford
  • Tuesday 6th March at 7.30pm at All Saints, Peckham
  • Monday 14th March at 7.30pm at St James, Kidbrooke

All meetings will last no more than 1.5 hours and refreshments will be served 30 minutes before the start.

GREENWICH WINTER NIGHT SHELTER
The Greenwich Winter Night Shelter for the homeless, which runs from January to the end of March, needs volunteers for Sunday and Tuesday nights and Monday and Wednesday mornings, as well as overnight staff. The shelter comprises a pool of seven churches, which provide hot meals and beds for up to 15 people every night. Run wholly by volunteers, the initiative has been awarded the Housing Justice Quality Mark. Helpers don’t need to come every week – any assistance is appreciated, and training is provided. If you would like to get involved, please contact Canon Kim Hitch at k.w.hitch@btinternet.com or on 020 8856 3438. For more details, see Fr Jim.
