Helpers are still needed for the summer fair on Saturday 22nd June, in particular on the book stall and café. Any contributions, especially items for the children’s tombolasuch as small toys and treats, can be left in the parish office. Cakes and plants to be sold can be delivered to church on Friday morning or on Saturday before 10am, when the fair starts. Raffle tickets will be on sale after the Eucharist today.
Flyers for the fair are available at the back of church. Please do take some and distribute! There are also A4-size posters for pinning up in shops or elsewhere. If you’d like to help in any way, please speak with Jene Kerr or Fr Jim.
The fair is part of the church’s annual patronal festival, which begins with a 10amEucharist on Thursday 20th June – Corpus Christi. Holy Trinity Eltham will also have a Sung Eucharist for Corpus Christi at 7:30pm, and members of all deanery churches in Eltham and Mottingham are invited to come along. The patronal festival continues at St. John’s with a Eucharist on Friday 21st June, and ends with a Parish Eucharist celebrating the Birth of John the Baptist on Sunday 23rd June.
SUMMER CONCERT AT ST ALFEGE CHURCH TODAY
The Thomas Tallis Society Choir will sing Bach’s Magnificat at a concert this evening at St Alfege Church in Greenwich. The event, at 6:30pm, is being held to mark the retirement of Revd Canon Chris Moody, vicar of St Alfege Church for 14 years and a member of the Thomas Tallis choir. The choir will also sing works by Tallis and Purcell. Please see the poster on the St John’s noticeboard for more details.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK
Thank you to everyone who contributed to Christian Aid Week. Through activities in church and a bucket collection at Eltham station, we raised the amazing amount of £1,137.35. Margaret Taylor also completed the Circle the City Walk and sent £100 to Christian Aid, of which £42 came from members of St John’s who sponsored her.
GROWING IN FAITH AND LIFE
Applications are open for the Bishop’s Certificate in Discipleship 2019-2020, a 10-month course entitled ‘Growing in Faith and Life.’ The course, which runs from September to June, has six modules, including the history of the Anglican Church, what Christians believe, and ethics. Do pick up a leaflet at the back of church for further details. Please speak to Fr Jim if you have any questions.
Eight members of the church are to be confirmed by the Rt Revd Dr KaroweiDorgu, Bishop of Woolwich, on Sunday 14th July at St. John’s. As part of the preparation for confirmation, candidates will attend two classes to be held in
church at 10:30am on 29th June and 6th July. Please pray for the candidates.
The Southwark Diocese will hold a spirituality day on Saturday 19th October.Entitled ‘To Be a Pilgrim,’ the day conference at Southwark Cathedral will ask what it means to be a pilgrim on the Christian journey. Speakers include Dr Meg Warner, an Old Testament scholar and author of books on Abraham, and Bishop of Southwarkthe Rt Revd Christopher Chessun. The day runs 10am-4pm and costs £8.
